It's a drag, and it usually costs money, but seeing a dentist once a year is one of the best measures for avoiding big mouth trouble.
Dentists are trained to help and advise you, and to take preventive measures that help to avoid future probelms.
You can save loads and loads of money later in life if you look after your teeth now, but you do need the help of a dentist (and possibly hygienist*).
* Hygienists are lovely people, really lovely. They clean your caked up, smelly, teeth. Give you tips about brushing and don't complain about your smelly breath (which will disappear after the cleaning). Hygienists are fab.
